Яйцо - это мужская гонада у животных. Как яичники, к которым они гомологичны, семенники являются компонентами как репродуктивной системы, так и эндокринной системы. Основные функции семенников - производство спермы и производство андрогенов, прежде всего тестостерона. На обе функции яичка влияют гонадотропные гормоны, вырабатываемые передним гипофизом. Лютеинизирующий гормон приводит к высвобождению тестостерона. Присутствие как тестостерона, так и фолликулостимулирующего гормона необходимо для поддержки сперматогенеза. В исследованиях на животных также показано, что если яички подвергаются воздействию слишком высокого или слишком низкого уровня эстрогенов, сперматогенез может быть нарушен до такой степени, что животные становятся бесплодными.
