Эффект Зеемана, названный в честь голландского физика Питера Зеемана, является следствием расщепления спектральной линии на несколько компонентов в присутствии статического магнитного поля. Это аналогично эффекту Штарка, расщепление спектральной линии на несколько компонентов при наличии электрического поля. Подобно эффекту Штарка, переходы между различными компонентами имеют, как правило, разные интенсивности, причем некоторые из них полностью запрещены, что регулируется правилами отбора. Так как расстояние между зеемановскими подуровнями является функцией магнитного поля, этот эффект может быть использован для измерения магнитного поля, например. Солнца и других звезд или в лабораторных плазмах. Эффект Зеемана очень важен в таких приложениях, как спектроскопия ядерного магнитного резонанса, спектроскопия электронного спинового резонанса, магнитно-резонансная томография и мессбауэровская спектроскопия. Он также может быть использован для повышения точности атомно-абсорбционной спектроскопии. Теория о магнитном восприятии птиц предполагает, что белок в сетчатке изменяется из-за эффекта Зеемана. Когда спектральные линии являются линиями поглощения, эффект называется обратным эффектом Зеемана.
