Плавление зоны представляет собой группу аналогичных методов очистки кристаллов, в которых расплавляется узкая область кристалла, и эта расплавленная зона перемещается вдоль кристалла. Расплавленная область расплавляется нечистым твердым веществом на его переднем краю и оставляет следы более чистого материала, затвердевшего за ним, когда он проходит через слиток. Концентрации примесей в расплаве и перемещаются на один конец слитка. Очистка зоны была разработана Уильямом Гарднер Пфанном в Bell Labs как метод подготовки материалов высокой чистоты для изготовления транзисторов. Его раннее использование было на германии для этой цели, но оно может быть распространено практически на любую систему растворенного растворителя, имеющую значительную разность концентраций между твердой и жидкой фазами в равновесии. Этот процесс также известен как процесс с плавающей зоной, особенно в обработке полупроводниковых материалов.
