18 ஆம் நூற்றாண்டில், ஜேர்மனிய மருத்துவர் ஃபிரான்ஸ் மெஸ்மர், விலங்குகளால் உந்தப்பட்ட ஒரு கண்ணுக்கு தெரியாத இயற்கையான சக்தியாக நம்பப்படுபவருக்கு வழங்கப்பட்ட பெயர் விலங்கு காந்தம். சக்தி வலிமை உள்ளிட்ட உடல்ரீதியான விளைவுகளை ஏற்படுத்தும் என்று அவர் நம்பினார். அவரது கோட்பாடுகளில் அறிவியல் அறிவை அடைவதற்கு வெற்றிகரமாக முயற்சி செய்தார். இந்த கோட்பாடு ஐரோப்பாவிலும் அமெரிக்காவிலும் பல சீடர்களை ஈர்த்தது மற்றும் பத்தொன்பதாம் நூற்றாண்டில் பிரபலமாக இருந்தது. 1779 ஆம் ஆண்டில் அதன் தொடக்கத்திலிருந்து சுமார் எழுபத்தி ஐந்து ஆண்டுகளுக்கு மருத்துவத்தில் முக்கியத்துவம் வாய்ந்ததாக இருந்தது, மற்றொரு ஐம்பது ஆண்டுகளாக சில செல்வாக்கையும் தொடர்ந்து கொண்டிருக்கிறது. நூற்றுக்கணக்கான புத்தகங்கள் 1766 க்கும் 1925 க்கும் இடையில் எழுதப்பட்டன. இன்று அது முற்றிலும் மறக்கப்பட்டுவிட்டது. சில நாடுகளில் மாற்று மருந்தின் வடிவமாக விலங்கு காந்தம் இன்னும் நடைமுறையில் உள்ளது. காந்த நடைமுறைகள் மருத்துவ அறிவியல் பகுதியாக அடையாளம் காணப்படவில்லை.
