பழங்கால கிரேக்க துன்பகரமான கதாபாத்திரத்தின் முதல் பாகத்தை முதலில் குறிப்பிடும் ஒரு கவிதை என்பது ஒரு முரட்டுத்தனமான சொல். பல்வேறு நீளமான வரி நீளம் கொண்ட ஸ்டான்ஸாஸ் கொண்ட ஒரு கவிதைக்கான கட்டமைப்பு பிரிவு என்பது இந்த வார்த்தைக்கு நீட்டிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. இதிகாச கவிதைகள் போன்ற ஒத்த அலகுகளால் எழுதப்பட்ட கவிதைகள், ஸ்டிராபிக் என்ற சொல் ஸ்டான்சிக் என்ற பொருளைக் குறிக்கும். ஜான் மில்டன் சாம்சன் அகோனிஸ்டுகளின் முன்னுரையில் எழுதியது போல், அதன் அசல் கிரேக்க அமைப்பில், "ஸ்ட்ரோப்ஹே, ஆன்டிஸ்ட்ரோபீ மற்றும் எபோட் இசையமைப்பிற்காக மட்டுமே ஒரு வகையான ஸ்டான்ஸாவை உருவாக்கியது", இது கிரேக்க கோராஸ் மூலம் வலது பக்கம் இடது பக்கம் காட்சி முழுவதும்.
