Ortak değerin bir ölçüsü olarak kullanılan formül: Katma Değer = Ürünün / hizmetin satıldığı fiyat - Ürünün üretilmesi maliyeti Katma Değer, belirli bir ürünün nihai satış fiyatı ile doğrudan satış fiyatı arasındaki fark olarak da tanımlanabilir ve dolaylı girdi o ürünü üretirken kullanılır. Aradaki fark, işletme tarafından ödenen tüm maliyet ve vergilerin o mali yıla ödenmesinden sonra firma ve hissedarları için kar anlamına gelir. Katma değer veya herhangi bir önlem, yatırımcıların yatırım yapmak için değerli bir iş olup olmadığını veya başka ve daha iyi fırsatlar olup olmadığını belirlemelerine yardımcı olabilir.
