Agra ayrıca merkezi Agra şehrinde bulunan idari bölgeye de atıfta bulunmaktadır. UNESCO Dünya Mirası Listesi olan ünlü Taş Devri binaları, en önemlisi Taha Mahal, Agra Kalesi ve Fatehpur Sikrisi nedeniyle önemli bir turistik yer. Agra, Golden Triangle turizm devresinde Delhi ve Jaipur ile birlikte yer almaktadır. Sözde Agrevaṇa olarak adlandırılan epik Mahābhārata'da kentin adı geçmektedir. Efsane kentin kuruluşunu, Sikarwar Rajput kralı olan Raja Badal Singh'e atfetti. Kalesi, Badalgarh, günümüz kale alanının üzerinde ya da yakınında duruyordu.
