Polinezya dillerinde "ait" sözcüğü, hayaletler veya ruhlar, çoğunlukla kötü niyetli kişiler anlamına gelir. Sözcük, Batı ve Doğu Polinezyası'nın birçok dilinde ortaktır. Tonga mitolojisinde, örneğin, 'bir varlık ya da bir' daha küçük tanrılardır, birçoğu belirli köy ve ailelerin himayeleri altındadır.
