Alpenstock, ortaçağdan beri Alpler'deki karlı alanlarda ve buzullarda seyahat etmek için çobanların kullandığı, demir başaklı uzun ahşap direktir. Modern buz baltasının öncüsüdür. Fransızca konuşan tırmanıcılar bu öğeyi bir "baton" olarak adlandırdılar. Daha sonra Zürih Üniversitesine dönüşen İsviçre profesörü Josias Simler, Alpler'de De Alpibus commentarius adlı ilk tezi yayınladı. T. Yvon Chouinard, Simler'ı şöyle yazıyor: "Buzların kayganlığını gidermek için atların ayakkabılarına benzeyen ayakkabılarına, üç keskin sivri uçla benzeşerek, sıkı durabilmeleri için sıkıca bağlarlar.
