Bir bitki içinde, apoplast, plazma membranının dışındaki serbest difüzyon boşluğudur. Köklerde Casparian şeridi, bitki hücreleri arasındaki hava boşlukları ve bitki kütikülüyle kesilir. Yapısal olarak apoplast, bitişik hücrelerin hücre duvarlarının sürekliliği ve hücre dışı alanlar tarafından oluşturulur ve semplastla karşılaştırılabilir bir doku seviyesi bölmesi oluşturur. Apoplastik yol, bir doku veya organın üzerinden su ve çözünen maddelerin taşınmasını kolaylaştırır. Bu süreç apoplastik transport olarak bilinir. Apoplast, tüm bitkinin çevresi ile etkileşimi için önemlidir. Ana karbon kaynağının, plazma membranından hücrenin sitoplazmasına dağılmadan önce apoplastta çözündürülmesi gerekir ve fotosentez sırasında kloroplastlar tarafından kullanılır. Köklerde, iyonlar semptuma yayılmadan önce epidermisin apoplastına yayılır veya bazı durumlarda spesifik iyon kanalları tarafından alınır ve apoplastın sınırları içinde tamamen gerçekleşen bitkinin transpirasyon akımı tarafından çekilir.
