Uygulama yazılımı, belirli bir uygulama için işlemleri gerçekleştirmek üzere tasarlanmış bir veya daha fazla program grubudur. Uygulama yazılımı kendisi üzerinde çalışamaz, ancak çalıştırmak için sistem yazılımına bağımlıdır. Örneğin: MS Word, MS Excel, Tally yazılımı, Kütüphane yönetim sistemi, faturalandırma sistemi vs. Bu terim böyle bir yazılımı bir bilgisayarın yeteneklerini yöneten ve bütünleştiren sistem yazılımı olarak anılan başka bir bilgisayar programı türüne karşıt kılmak için kullanılır doğrudan kullanıcıya yarar sağlayacak görevler gerçekleştirmeyin. Pek çok uygulama programı esas olarak belgelerle ilgilidir. Uygulamalar bilgisayar ve sistem yazılımı ile birlikte verilebilir veya ayrı olarak yayınlanabilir ve üniversite projeleri olarak kodlanabilir. Uygulama yazılımı belirli bir bilgi işlem platformunun veya sistem yazılımının gücünü belirli bir amaca uygular.
