Optics, Retinoscopy, and Refractometry
Astigmatism Astigmatism, in most cases, is caused by an irregularly shaped
cornea. If there is regular corneal astigmatism, one meridian of the cornea is the
flattest and perpendicular (ie, 90 degrees away) to this is the steepest meridian.
Astigmatism is caused by an irregular curvature of the clear front covering of the
eye, the cornea. A perfectly shaped cornea is spherical, like a baseball, allowing
all light rays to enter the eye and bringing them to focus on the retina.
