Sıkışan bir madde, vücut dokularını küçültme veya bükülme eğilimi olan kimyasal bir bileşiktir. "Sıkıcı" kelimesi, "hızlı bağlamak" anlamına gelen Latince adstringere kaynaklı. İki yaygın örnek calamine losyon ve cadı elmasıdır. Büzülme, aynı zamanda karaağaç, Aronia çikolata, boğuk çikolata, kuş kirazı, ayva ve persimmon meyveleri ve muz ciltleri gibi pek çok meyvede bulunan tanenlerin neden olduğu kuru, sıkıcı ağız kokusu. Taninler, tükürük proteinlerini bağlarlar; bu proteinler, çökelmesine veya toplanmasına ve ağızda kaba bir "sandpapery" veya kuru sansasyona neden olur. Tanenler bazı kırmızı şaraplar ve çaylarda bulunur. Bazı şaraplarda, özellikle de cabernet sauvignon ve merlot gibi üzümlerden yapılan genç kırmızı şaraplar, az miktarda gerginlik bekleniyor.
