Augustus, Roma İmparatorluğunun kurucusu ve M.Ö. 27'den MS 14'te ölümüne kadar geçen ilk İmparatordu. Gaius Octavius'u, plebeian Octavii ailesinin yaşlı ve zengin atlı bir kolunda doğdu. M.Ö. 44 yılında annesi olan büyük amcası Julius Caesar'ın öldürülmesinin ardından, Caesar'ın evlatlık oğlu ve mirasçısı Octavian seçilecek. Mark Antony ve Marcus Lepidus'la birlikte Sezar katili yenmek için İkinci Triumvirat'ı kurdu. Philipi'deki zaferlerini takiben, Triumvirat, Roma Cumhuriyeti'ni kendi aralarında paylaştı ve askeri diktatörler olarak yönetildi. Triumvirate sonunda üyelerinin rakip hırsları altında parçalara ayrıldı: Lepidus sürgüne gönderildi ve görevinden alındı ve Antony, M.Ö. 31'de Augustum tarafından Actium Savaşı'nda yenilgiye uğratıldıktan sonra intihar etti. İkinci Triumvirat'ın çöküşünden sonra, Augustus, Roma Senatosu, icra memurları ve yasama meclislerinde hükümet yetkisine sahip olan özgür Cumhuriyet'in dış cephesini onarmıştı. Ancak gerçekte Cumhuriyet üzerindeki otokratik gücünü bir askeri diktatör olarak kaldı.
