Toprak ufku
Bir toprak ufku, genel olarak toprak yüzeyine paralel olan, fiziksel özellikleri altındaki ve üstteki tabakalardan farklı olan bir tabakadır. Her toprak türü genelde üç veya dört ufk içerir. Ufuklar çoğu durumda belirgin fiziksel özellikler, başlıca renk ve doku ile tanımlanır. Bunlar, mutlak terimlerle ve çevreleyen materyalle, yani yukarıdaki ve aşağıda olan ufuklardan daha 'kaba' veya 'zımpara' göre görülebilir. Regolit'in farklı ufuklara ayrılması, büyük ölçüde hava, su, güneş radyasyonu ve bitki materyali gibi toprak-atmosfer arayüzünden kaynaklanan etkilerin sonucudur. Regolitin aşınması ilk olarak yüzeyde gerçekleştiğinden ve en aşağıdaki katmanlar en çok değişirken, en derin katmanlar orijinal regoliteye en çok benzemektedir. Belirli bir yerde bulunan ufukların tanımlanması ve tanımlanması, USDA toprak taksonomisi veya Avustralya Toprak Sınıflaması gibi sistemlerin kullanılması yoluyla, daha yüksek seviyelerde toprak sınıflandırılmasının ilk adımıdır.
