Davranışçılık, felsefenin, metodolojinin ve teorinin unsurlarını birleştiren psikolojiye bir yaklaşımdır. Yirminci yüzyılın başında sıkı deney yöntemleri kullanılarak test edilebilen tahminlerde zorluk çeken "zihinsel" psikolojiye bir tepki olarak ortaya çıktı. John B. Watson, B. F. Skinner ve diğerlerinin yazılarında ifade edilen davranışcılığın temel ilkesi, psikolojinin zihinlerinde gözlemlenebilecek olaylarla değil insanın ve hayvanların gözlemlenebilir davranışıyla ilgilidir. Davranışçı düşünce ekibi, bu tür davranışların bilimsel olarak ya iç fizyolojik olaylara ya da düşünce ve inançlar gibi varsayımsal yapılara başvurulmaksızın tarif edilebileceğini savunur. 19. yüzyıldaki erken psikolojiden, davranışçı düşünce ekibi aynı anda koştular ve 20. yüzyıla psikolojideki psikoanalitik ve Gestalt hareketleri ile ortak noktalar paylaştılar; aynı zamanda Gestalt psikologlarının zihinsel felsefesinden eleştirel yoldan farklıydı.
