Hans Bethe
Hans Albrecht Bethe, astrofizik, kuantum elektrodinamik ve katı hal fiziğine önemli katkılarda bulunmanın yanı sıra, Yıldız Nükleosentez teorisi üzerine yaptığı çalışmalardan dolayı 1967 Nobel Fizik Ödülünü kazanan bir Alman ve Amerikalı nükleer fizikçiydi. Kariyerinin çoğunda Bethe, Cornell Üniversitesi'nde profesördü. II. Dünya Savaşı sırasında ilk atom bombalarını geliştiren gizli Los Alamos laboratuvarındaki Teorik Bölüm başkanlığı yaptı. Orada, kritik silah kütlesi hesaplamasında ve Trinity testinde kullanılan patlama yönteminin ardındaki teoriyi geliştirmede ve Ağustos 1945'te Nagasaki'ye düşen "Fat Man" silahında önemli bir rol oynamıştır. Savaştan sonra Bethe ayrıca hidrojen bombasının gelişiminde önemli rol oynamıştı, ancak projeye katılamadığını ispat etme umuduyla projeye katıldı. Bethe, daha sonra Albert Einstein ve Atom Bilim Dalı Acil Komitesi ile nükleer test ve nükleer silah yarışına karşı kampanya yürüttü. Kennedy ve Nixon yönetimlerinin sırasıyla 1963 Kısmi Nükleer Test Yasağı Anlaşması ve 1972 Anti Balistik Füze Antlaşması'nı imzalamaya ikna etmesine yardım etti.
