Biyokimya, bazen biyolojik kimya olarak adlandırılır, canlı organizmalar içinde ve bu organizmalarla ilgili kimyasal süreçlerin incelenmesidir. Biyokimyasal işaretleme ve metabolizma yoluyla kimyasal enerjinin akışı yoluyla bilgi akışını kontrol ederek, biyokimyasal işlemler yaşamın karmaşıklığını ortaya çıkarmaktadır. Son 40 yılda biyokimya, yaşam bilimlerindeki botanikten tıbba kadar neredeyse tüm alanların biyokimyasal araştırmalara girdiğini canlı süreçleri açıklamakta başarılı oldu. Günümüzde, saf biyokimyanın odak noktası, canlı hücrelerde meydana gelen süreçlerin biyolojik moleküllerin nasıl oluştuğunun anlaşılmasıdır; bu süreç, bütün organizmaların çalışılması ve anlaşılması ile büyük ölçüde ilgilidir. Biyokimya, moleküler biyoloji ile yakından ilişkilidir; DNA'da kodlanmış genetik bilgilerin, yaşam süreçlerine neden olabileceği moleküler mekanizmaların incelenmesi. Kullanılan terimlerin kesin tanımına bağlı olarak, moleküler biyoloji, moleküler biyolojiyi araştırmak ve incelemek için bir araç olarak biyokimyanın veya biyokimyanın bir dalı olarak düşünülebilir.
