Biyodegradasyon, materyallerin bakteriler veya diğer biyolojik yollarla kimyasal olarak çözündürülmesidir. Çoğu kez çökmüş olmasına rağmen, biyolojik olarak parçalanabilir, kompostable olduğu anlamına gelir. Biyolojik olarak parçalanabilir sadece mikroorganizmalar tarafından tüketilmek ve doğada bulunan bileşiklere geri dönmek anlamına gelir, ancak "kompostlanabilir", nesnenin komposto yığını içinde parçalanması talebinde bulunur.
