Kuşlar tüyler, kanatlı, iki ayaklı, sıcakkanlı, yumurta dökmeyen omurgalılardır. Aves en canlı türleri yaklaşık on bin olan tetrapod sınıfı olarak sıralanmaktadır. Mevcut kuşlar, dünya çapında yaşayan ve 5 cm arı kuşundan 2.75 m devekuşuna kadar değişen, alt sınıfı Neornithes'e aittir. Fosil kayıtları, kuşların yaklaşık 150 milyon yıl önce Jurassic döneminde theropod dinozorlarında ortaya çıktığını gösteriyor. Çoğu araştırmacı, Günümüz kuşlarının Dinosaurya tüzüğünün yaşayan tek üyesi olduğuna katılıyor. Modern kuşların tüyleri, dişleri olmayan bir gagası, sert kabuklu yumurtaların döşenmesi, yüksek bir metabolik hız, dört odacıklı kalp ve hafif ama güçlü bir iskelet vardır.
