Asfalt
Asfalt, aynı zamanda bitüm olarak da bilinir; yapışkan, siyah ve çok yapışkan sıvı veya yarı katı bir petrol türüdür. Doğal çökeltilerde bulunabilir veya rafine edilmiş bir ürün olabilir; bir zift olarak sınıflandırılan bir maddedir. 20. yüzyıla kadar, asfaltum terimi de kullanıldı. Asfalt / bitümün birincil kullanımı, yol yapımında, asfalt betonu oluşturmak için agrega parçacıklarıyla karıştırılmış yapıştırıcı veya bağlayıcı olarak kullanıldığı yerdedir. Diğer ana kullanım alanları, çatı kaplama keçe üretimi ve düz çatıların sızdırmazlığı için bitümlü su yalıtım ürünleri içindir. Asfalt ve bitüm terimleri, maddenin hem doğal hem de imal edilmiş biçimlerini ifade etmek için birbirinin yerine kullanılır. Amerikan İngilizcesinde, asfalt, seçilen ham yağların damıtılmasından elde edilen rafine edilmiş kalıntıdır. Birleşik Devletlerin dışında, ürün genellikle bitüm olarak adlandırılır. Jeolojik terminoloji çoğu zaman bitüm terimini tercih eder. Genel kullanım, genellikle, La Brea Tar Çukurları gibi "katran" olarak çeşitli asfalt / zift formlarını ifade eder. Çoğu zaman antik olan başka bir terim asfalt / zifti "zift" olarak ifade eder.
İngilizce sözlükte bitumen sözcüğünün tanımı
Sözlükte ilk olarak bitüm tanımı, asfalt, katran, mineral mumlar vb. Doğal olarak oluşan hidrokarbonların çeşitli viskoz veya katı saf olmayan karışımlarından herhangi biridir: yol kaplaması ve çatı malzemesi olarak kullanılır. Bitümün diğer tanımı, bir organik çözücü ile ekstrakte edilebilen kömürün unsurlarıdır. Bitüm ayrıca agrega kaplamaya uygun herhangi bir sıvıdır.
