Bir blastopore, bir organizmanın embriyonik aşamaları sırasında kemer bölgesine açılan bir açılımtır. Protostomlar ve dötereostomlar arasındaki ayrım, ağızın patlama gözenekleriyle ilişkili olarak gelişme yönüne dayanır. Protostom, "birinci ağızdan" anlamına gelen protostoma Yunanca sözcüğünden, ikinci ve ağızdan gelen sözcüklerden Deuterostome'nin etimolojisi "ikinci ağızdan" çıkar. Deuterostomlar ve protostomlar arasındaki başlıca ayrımlar embriyonik gelişmede bulunur: ▪ Ağız / anüs ▪ Protosto geliştirmede, gelişmedeki ilk açılım olan blastopore, hayvanın ağzı olur. ▪ Dutermostom gelişiminde, blastopore hayvanların anüs olur. ▪ Bölünme ▪ Protostomların belirleyici olan spiral bölünme olduğu bilinir; bu, hücrelerin kaderi oluştuğu anda belirlenir. ▪ Deuterostomlar belirsiz radyal yarılma olarak bilinir.
