Beyin sapı
İnsanın ve diğer omurgalıların anatomisinde, beyin sapı beynin arka kısmı olup bitişik ve yapısal olarak omurga ile kesintisizdir. İnsanlarda genelde medulla oblongata, pons ve orta beyin dahil olarak tanımlanır. Daha seyrek olarak, diensefalonun bazı kısımları dahil edilmiştir. Beyin sapı, kafa sinirleri vasıtasıyla ana motor ve duyu bölgelerinin yüz ve boyun bölgesine yönlendirilmesini sağlar. Oniki çift kafa siniri, on çift beyinsapından geliyor. Küçük olmasına rağmen beyin ana bölümünden vücudun geri kalanına kadar olan motor ve duyu sistemlerinin sinir bağlantıları beyin sapı içinden geçtiği için bu beynin son derece önemli bir parçasıdır. Buna kortikospinal yol, posterior kolon-medial lemniscus yolu ve spinotalamik yol dahildir. Beyin sapı kardiyak ve solunum fonksiyonlarının düzenlenmesinde de önemli bir rol oynamaktadır. Aynı zamanda merkezi sinir sistemini düzenler ve bilinçliliğini korumak ve uyku döngüsünü düzenlemek için kilit önem taşır. Beyinsapının kalp hızı, nefes alma, uyuma ve yeme gibi birçok temel fonksiyonu vardır.
