Beyin yıkama ve akıl kontrolü teorileri, totaliter rejimlerin propagandacı ve işkence teknikleri ile savaş mahkumlarını sistematik bir şekilde başarılı bir şekilde nasıl başarabildiklerini açıklamak için geliştirildi. Bu teoriler daha sonra Jean-Marie Abgrall ve Margaret Singer gibi psikologlar tarafından genişletildi ve daha geniş bir yelpazedeki olayları, özellikle de yeni dini hareketlere dönüşümü açıklamak için değiştirildi.
