Butyrate, bütirik asidin eşlenik bazının geleneksel adıdır. Butirat iyonunun formülü C4H7O2- dir. Adı kısa zincirli yağ asidi olan butirik asidin esterleri ve tuzlarının bir parçası olarak kullanılır. Örnekler: ▪ Selüloz asetat butirat, bir hava aracı ilaç ▪ Metil bütirat ▪ Etil bütirat ▪ Butil bütirat ▪ Pentil bütirat ▪ Psikiyatride kullanılan bir HDAC inhibitörü olan sodyum bütirat Butyratlar, memeli kolonunu kaplayan hücreler için gıda olarak önemlidir. Enerji butiratları olmadan, kolon hücreleri otofajiye girer ve ölürler. Butyrate içeren kısa zincirli yağ asitleri, yeterli miktarda diyet lifi içeren bitkisel ürünler olan prebiyotikleri besleyen ya da fermente ederek faydalı kolonik bakteriler tarafından üretilir. Bu kısa zincirli yağ asitleri, enerji üretimini ve hücre proliferasyonunu arttırarak kolonosite fayda sağlar ve kolon kanserine karşı koruma sağlayabilir. Butirat, diyet lifinin bakteriyel fermantasyonundan kaynaklanan kolon lümeninde önemli bir metabolittir ve kolonik inflamatuvar cevabın kritik aracı olduğu gösterilmiştir.
