Centrosymmetry
Genellikle kristalografide kullanılan centrosymmetric terimi, simetri elementlerinden biri olarak bir inversiyon merkezi içeren bir nokta grubuna karşılık gelir. Böyle bir nokta grubunda, birim hücrenin her noktası için ayırt edilemez bir nokta vardır. Nokta yansıma geometride kullanılan benzer bir terimdir. Bir inversiyon merkezli kristaller, piezoelektrik etki gibi belirli özellikleri görüntüleyemez. Bir inversiyon merkezinden yoksun nokta grupları ayrıca polar ve kiral tiplere ayrılmıştır. Şiral bir nokta grubu, herhangi bir dönüş-dönüşümü simetri elemanı olmayan bir şiral nokta grubudur. Dönüşüm dönüşümü, dönüşümün izlediği dönüşdür; Örneğin, bir ayna yansıması iki kat döndürmeye karşılık gelir. Kiral nokta grupları bu nedenle sadece döner simetri içermelidir. Bunlar, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 222, 422, 622, 32, 23 ve 432 kristal nokta gruplarından kaynaklanmaktadır. Şiral nokta gruplarında protein gibi kiral moleküller kristalleşir.
