Cephalochordata'da, notokord baştan kuyruğa uzanır ve yaşamları boyunca devam eder. Bu altbilginin üyeleri çok küçüktür ve zor parçaları bulunmamaktadır, bu da fosil bulmalarını zorlaştırmaktadır. Fosilleşmiş türler, omurgalılardan önceki eski kayaçlarda bulunmuştur. Britanya Kolombiyası Orta Kambriyen Burgess Shale'den ünlü fosil şeyl, Pikaia fosilleri üretmiştir. Son günlerde, güney Çin'de farklı bir sefalokordat fosili bulundu. Kambriyen döneminin başlangıcına tarihlenen ve sefalokordan soyunun bilinen en eski fosili.
