Kromosfer, Güneş'in atmosferinde üç ana katmanın ikincisidir ve yaklaşık 2.000 kilometre derinliğindedir. Fotoğraf küresinin hemen üzerinde ve güneş geçiş bölgesinin hemen altında oturuyor. Kromosfer yoğunluğu çok düşüktür, fotosforun sadece 10-4 katı, hemen altındaki katman ve Dünya'nın atmosferinin 10-8 katıdır. Bu, kromozeri normalde görünmez yapar ve yalnızca kırmızımsı rengin ortaya çıktığı toplam tutulma sırasında görülebilir. Renk tonları pembe ve kırmızı arasındaki herhangi bir yerdedir.
