Yaygın kitaplar, genellikle kitaplara bilgi yazarak bilgiyi derlemek için bir yoldu. Bu tür kitaplar temelde tıbbi reçeteler, alıntılar, mektuplar, şiirler, ağırlık ve ölçü tabloları, atasözleri, namazlar, hukuki formüller gibi her türlü öğe ile dolu defterlerdi. Ortak alanlar, okuyanlar, yazarlar, öğrenciler ve akademisyenler tarafından, öğrendikleri yararlı kavramları veya gerçekleri hatırlamak için bir yardımcı olarak kullanıldı. Her sıradan kitap, yaratıcısının belirli çıkarları için benzersizdi. Erken Modern Avrupa'da önem kazanıyorlardı. "Ortak Yer", Latus lokus communis'in tercümesiz bilgeliği ifadesi gibi "genel başvurunun teması veya argümanı" anlamına gelen bir tercümesidir. Bu orijinal anlamda, sıradan kitaplar, John Milton'un sıradan kitabı gibi sözlerin koleksiyonlarıydı. Akademisyenler, bir kişinin ortak bir tema boyunca materyal toplayan el yazmalarını da içerecek şekilde bu kullanımını genişletti.
