Amonyum, bitkiler tarafından kullanılan azot biçimidir. Mevcut amonyum bitkiler tarafından kullanılmadığı zaman, nitrifikasyon işlemi vasıtasıyla bakteriler tarafından nitratlara dönüştürülür. Komposto besin maddelerinden zengin olabilir. Bahçelerde, peyzajda, bahçecilikte ve tarımda kullanılır.
