Genellikle bir yaprak, zemin üzerinde taşınan ve fotosentez için uzmanlaşmış ince, dorsiventrally düzleştirilmiş bir organdır. Yaprakların çoğunda, renk, tüylülük, stoma sayısı ve diğer özellikleri farklı olan farklı üst ve alt yüzeyleri bulunur. Palisade mezofili, bıçağın üst tabakasında veya yaprak tabakasında bulunur; ancak bazı türlerde, Eucalyptus palisade'nin olgun yaprakları her iki tarafta da oluşur ve yapraklar isilateral olarak adlandırılır.
