Kontrol ünitesi, işlemcinin çalışmasını yönlendiren bir bilgisayarın merkezi işlem ünitesinin bir parçasıdır. Giriş / çıkış cihazları arasındaki iletişim ve koordinasyonu kontrol eder. Talimatları okur ve yorumlar ve verileri işleme sırasını belirler. Zamanlama ve kontrol sinyalleri sağlayarak diğer birimlerin çalışmasını yönlendirir. Tüm bilgisayar kaynakları CU tarafından yönetilmektedir. Merkezi İşlem Birimi ve diğer cihazlar arasındaki veri akışını yönlendirir. Kontrol ünitesi tarihsel olarak Von Neumann mimarisinin 1946 referans modelinin ayrı bir parçası olarak tanımlandı. Modern bilgisayar tasarımlarında kontrol ünitesi, genel olarak rolü ve çalışması değişmeden CPU'nun dahili bir parçasıdır.
