Bir kooperatif veya kooperatif, karşılıklı sosyal, ekonomik ve kültürel yararları için gönüllü olarak işbirliği yapan kişilerin özerk bir birleşimidir. Kooperatifler arasında, hizmetlerini kullanan insanlar tarafından veya orada çalışanlar tarafından veya orada yaşayan insanlar tarafından, işçi kooperatifleri gibi tüketici kooperatifleri veya kredi birlikleri olan hibritler tarafından ticareti yapılan kar amacı gütmeyen toplum örgütleri ve işletmeleri, sivil toplumu ve yerel aktörleri bir araya getiren çoklu paydaşlı kooperatifler, üyeleri başka kooperatif olan ikinci ve üçüncü düzey kooperatifler. Uluslararası İşbirliği İttifakı, hareket tarafından kurulan ilk uluslararası dernekti. Buna Dünya Kredi Birliği Birliği dahildir. İkinci bir organizasyon daha sonra Almanya'da, Uluslararası Raiffeisen Birliği'nde kuruldu. Amerika Birleşik Devletleri'nde Ulusal Kooperatif İş Dünyası Birliği, sektörün en eski ulusal üyelik derneği olarak görev yapmaktadır.
