Korozyon, malzemelerin çevreyle olan kimyasal tepkimesiyle giderek tahrip edilmesidir. Sözcüğün en yaygın kullanılanında oksijen gibi bir oksidanla reaksiyona giren metallerin elektrokimyasal oksidasyonu anlamına gelir. Demir oksitlerin oluşması paslanma, elektrokimyasal korozyonun iyi bilinen bir örneğidir. Bu tip hasar, tipik olarak, orijinal metalin oksitini veya tuzunu üretir. Korozyon, seramik veya polimerler gibi metal dışındaki materyallerde de ortaya çıkabilir; ancak bu bağlamda bozunma terimi daha sık görülür.
