Cryoconite
Cryoconite, kar, buzullar veya buzullara çökelmiş ve biriken küçük kaya parçacıkları, kurumlar ve mikroplardan oluşan, toz haline getirilmiş bir rüzgar geçiren tozdur. Karartma, özellikle kurumun küçük miktarlarından, güneş radyasyonunu emerek mevduatın altında kar veya buz eritiyor ve bazen bir kriyokonit deliği yaratıyor. Kriyokonite uzak kıta çöllerinde veya tarım arazilerinde, volkanik patlamalardan veya santral emisyonlarından ve kurumdan toz içerebilir. İlk kez 1870 yılında Grönland'ın buzul karadesine gittiğinde Nils A. E. Nordenskiöld tarafından tanımlandı ve adı geçti. Yaz aylarında, kriyokonit delikleri sıklıkla sıvı su içerdiğinden, bakteriler ve algler gibi soğuğa uyarlanmış mikroorganizmaların gelişmesi için niş sağladı. Kurum reflektiviteyi veya buz albedo'sunu düşürerek ısınmayı arttırır. Karla birlikte buz ve kar oluşumlarına sürekli olarak Cryoconite eklenir. Kar veya buzun içine gömülür ancak kar veya buz eriyince artan miktarda karanlık malzeme yüzeyde açığa çıkar, eritmeyi hızlandırır.
