Bir siyanokarbon olan 2-klorobenzalmalononitril bileşiği, bir ayaklanma kontrol ajanı olarak kullanılan CS gazı olarak bilinen bir göz yaşartıcı gazın tanımlayıcı bileşenidir. CS gazı, oda sıcaklığında katı bir bileşik olan uçucu bir çözücü ve 2-klorobenzalmalononitrilin bir aerosoludur. CS gazı genellikle öldürücü olarak kabul edilir. 1928'de Middlebury College'da iki Amerikalı olan Ben Corson ve Roger Stoughton tarafından keşfedildi ve kimyasal ismi bilim adamlarının soyadlarının ilk harflerinden türetildi. CS, 1950'ler ve 1960'larda İngiltere'nin Wiltshire kentinde bulunan Porton Down'da gizlice geliştirildi ve test edildi.
