Çivi yazımı, bilinen bir yazılı yazma sisteminden biridir ve kaide tabletleri üzerindeki kama biçiminde işaretlerle ayırt edilir ve bir kalem için künt bir saz ile yapılır. Çivi yazılı adı sadece Latince cuneus "kama" ve forma "şekil" ten "kama şekli" anlamına gelir ve muhtemelen Eski Fransız cunéiforme'den İngilizce kullanıma girmiştir. M.Ö. 4. bin yılların başında Sümer'de ortaya çıkan çivi yazısı bir simge sistemi olarak başladı. Üçüncü bin yılda, resimsel tasvirler basitleştirilmiş hale geldi ve daha soyutlandı, çünkü kullanılan karakter sayısı Erken Bronz Çağı'nda yaklaşık 1.000'den Geç Tunç Çağı'nda yaklaşık 400'e kadar küçüldü. Sistem, logofonetik, sessiz alfabetik ve heceli işaretlerin birleşiminden oluşur. Orijinal Sümer senaryosu, Akkad, Eblait, Elamit, Hitit, Luwi, Hattik, Hurriyen ve Urartu dillerinin yazımı için uyarlandı ve Ugarit ve Eski Farsça alfabelere ilham kaynağı oldu. Çıplak yazı, Neo-Asur İmparatorluğu döneminde yavaş yavaş Fenike alfabesi ile değiştirildi.
İngilizce sözlükte cuneiform sözcüğünün tanımı
Sözlükteki çivi biçiminin ilk tanımı da: cuneal. kama biçiminde oluşturulmuştur. Çivi biçiminin diğer tanımı, Mezopotamya ve İran'ın, başta Sümer, Babil olmak üzere birçok eski dilin yazımında kullanılan kama şeklindeki karakterlerle ilgili veya bunları belirtir. Çivi biçimi de, bu senaryonun istihdam edilmektedir.
