Baraj, su veya yeraltı derelerine dokunan bir bariyerdir. Barajlar genelde suyu tutmanın birincil amacına hizmet ederken, sel sızıntıları ya da su birikintileri gibi diğer yapılar belirli toprak bölgelerine su akışını yönetmek ya da önlemek için kullanılır. Hidroelektrik ve pompalı depolama hidroelektriği, elektrik üretmek için barajlarla birlikte sıklıkla kullanılır. Bir baraj da su toplamak veya yerlerin arasında eşit olarak dağıtılabilen su depolamak için kullanılabilir. Baraj kelimesi, birçok eski kentin adlarında görüldüğü gibi Orta Hollandaca'dan Orta İngilizce'ya ve bundan önce Orta Hollandaca'ya kadar uzanılabilir.
