Muhasebede, amortisman aynı kavramın iki yönüne atıfta bulunur: ▪ varlıkların değerindeki azalma ve ▪ varlıkların maliyetinin varlıkların kullanıldığı döneme bölüşümü. İlki, bir işletmenin veya işletmenin bilançosunu etkiler ve ikincisi, rapor ettikleri net geliri etkiler. Genellikle maliyet, amortisman gideri olarak, varlığın kullanılmasının beklendiği dönemler için ayrılır. Bu giderler işletmeler tarafından finansal raporlama ve vergi amaçlı olarak kabul edilmektedir.
