Dil, açıklama veya betimsel dilbilim çalışmasında, bir dilin konuşma topluluğunda bir grup insan tarafından nasıl konuşulduğunun objektif olarak analiz edilip açıklanması çalışmaları bulunmaktadır. Dilbilimdeki tüm akademik araştırmalar tanımlayıcıdır; Diğer tüm bilimlerde olduğu gibi, amacını dilbilim dünyasını olduğu gibi gözlemlemek ve nasıl olması gerektiğine ilişkin önyargılı fikirler olmaksızın gözlemlemektir. Modern tanımlayıcı dilbilim, Leonard Bloomfield ve diğerlerinin çalışmalarında örneklendiği gibi, dile yapısal bir yaklaşıma dayanıyor.
