Diastereomerler enantiomerler değil stereoizomerlerdir. Diastereomerizm, bir bileşiğin iki veya daha fazla stereo izomeri, eşdeğer stereosentrenin bir veya daha fazlasında farklı konfigürasyonlara sahip olduğunda ve birbirlerinin ayna görüntüleri olmadığında ortaya çıkar. İki diastereoizomer birbirinden yalnızca bir stereokonserde farklı olduklarında epimerlerdir. Her stereocenter iki farklı konfigürasyona yol açar ve böylece stereoizomer sayısını iki kat arttırır. Diastereomerler, enantiomerlerden farklıdır, çünkü sonuncusu, tüm stereosentrelerde farklı olan ve dolayısıyla birbirlerinin ayna görüntüleri olan stereoizomerler çiftidir.
