Diyoptik, ışığın kırılmasının, özellikle de merceklerin incelenmesidir. Görüntüyü bir dışbükey objektif olan bir objektifle yaratan teleskopların "diyoptri" teleskoplar olduğu söyleniyor. Ptolemey tarafından dioptrijiye ilişkin erken bir çalışma, insan gözüyle ilişkili olarak ve su gibi ortamlarda kırılma şeklinde gerçekleştirildi. Dioptriyel prensiplerin anlaşılması modern optik aygıtın babası sayılan Alhazen tarafından daha da genişletildi.
