An album is such a personal thing. It's something I always wanted to do. It's me doing me, singing as me.
I like to go to Africa purely with something to do. I'm not very comfortable getting into an armor-plated Land Rover and going to see things, with my hand gel, you know, it's not me at all. Fortunately, I've never been very conscious and inhibited of what I have to do. The camera's my soul mate.
By the time I was 30, nobody would work with me. I was friendless, I was hopeless, I was suicidal, lost my family - I mean, it was bad. Bottomed out, didn't know what I was going to do. I actually thought I was going to be a chef - go to work in a kitchen someplace.
This is all new to me, these re-releases. I don't know how these things do. I don't know if it will be people who saw it originally or young people.
I don't like getting older, but there's nothing I can do. Hitting 60 wasn't great, but I think I was lucky in not being that beautiful; it can be really cruel on people who have been stunning.
For me, I'm focused on what I want to do. I know what I need to do to be a champion, so I'm working on it.
