Bir belge, düşüncelerin yazılı veya çizilmiş bir sunumudur. Latince Documentum anlamı dersinden kaynaklanan fiil Doce Fi, öğretmek demektir ve benzer şekilde telaffuz edilir, geçmişte genellikle kanıt olarak kullanılan yazılı bir kanıt için bir terim olarak kullanılır. Bilgisayar çağında bir belge, genellikle yazı tipi, renk ve ek görüntüler gibi yapı ve tasarımla birlikte öncelikle bir metin dosyasını tanımlamak için kullanılır. Modern terim 'belge', elektronik belgelerin varlığını takiben, aktarım ortamı ile artık tanımlanamaz. Resmi terim 'doküman', Kütüphane ve bilgi biliminde ve dokümantasyon biliminde temel teorik bir yapı olarak tanımlanmaktadır. Bir amaç için kanıt olarak hizmet etmek için korunup temsil edilebilecek her şey budur. Suzanne Briet'in sunduğu klasik örnek antik bir antiloldur: "Afrika ovalarında vahşi bir antilop, belge olarak kabul edilmemelidir, kurallar koyar, ancak yakalanırlarsa, bir hayvanat bahçesine götürüldükleri ve bir çalışma konusu yaptıkları takdirde, bir belgeye dönüştürülmüş, bunu inceleyenlerin kullandığı fiziksel kanıt haline gelmiştir.
İngilizce sözlükte document sözcüğünün tanımı
Sözlükte belgenin ilk tanımı, bir resmi ya da yasal nitelikte bilgi veren bir kağıt, kitapçık vb. Parçasıdır. Dokümanın diğer tanımı, bir bilgisayarda doküman işleme yazılımı tarafından manipüle edilmek üzere bir dosya olarak saklanan bir metin parçası veya metin ve grafiktir. Belge de kanıttır; kanıt.
