Doğu ve kuzey kenarı terimleri, bir nokta için coğrafi Kartezyen koordinatlarıdır. Doğu yönü doğu yönünde ölçülen mesafeyi, kuzey yönü ise kuzeye doğru ölçülen mesafeyi ifade eder. Doğu ve kuzey koordinatları yatay bir datumdan metre cinsinden ölçülür. Bununla birlikte, imparatorluk birimleri de kullanılır. Koordinatlar en yaygın olarak, Ayrıntılı referans sağlamak için Dünya'yı örten benzersiz bölgeler içeren Evrensel Çapraz Mercator koordinat sistemiyle ilişkilendirilir. Kuzey yönü terimi, kaşifler tarafından Kuzey Kutbu'na yönelik genel bir ilerlemeyi tanımlamak için kullanılmıştır. Isaac Israel Hayes, New York Coğrafya ve İstatistik Cemiyeti'ne "Buhar gücünün istemek benim sınırlamamı kısıtladı" diyen bu terimi 1861'de kullandı.
