Deniz kestanesi veya kestanesi, bazen deniz kirpi olarak adlandırılırlar, küçük, dikenli, küre şeklindeki hayvanlardır ve yakın akrabalarıyla kum doları gibi ekinoderm filum sınıfı Echinoidea'yı oluştururlar. Ekineidlerin yaklaşık 950 türü, tüm okyanuslardan 5000 m derinliğe kadar tüm okyanuslarda yaşar. Deniz kestanesinin kabuğu veya "testi", yuvarlak ve dikenlidir, genelde 3 ila 10 cm arasında. Yaygın renkler yeşil, zeytin, kahverengi, mor, mavi ve kırmızıdan oluşan siyah ve donuk tonları içerir. Deniz kestanesi yavaş hareket eder ve çoğunlukla alglerle beslenir. Deniz su samurları, deniz yıldızları, kurt yılan balığı, tırtıklı balık ve diğer yırtıcılar, deniz kestaneleri avlamak ve yemlemek için kullanılırlar. Onların kuyruk onlar birçok mutfaklarda bir incelik olduğunu. "Kestan" adı, deniz kestanesi benzeyen yuvarlak dikenli kirpi için eski bir isimdir.
