Ekoloji, organizmaların birbirleriyle ve abiyotik ortamlarıyla olan etkileşimleri gibi organizmalar ve çevreleri arasındaki etkileşimlerin bilimsel bir araştırmasıdır. Ekolojistlerin ilgisini çeken konular arasında çeşitlilik, dağılım, miktar, organizma sayısı ve bunlar arasındaki ve ekosistemler arasındaki rekabet bulunmaktadır. Ekosistemler, organizmaları, oluşturduğu toplulukları ve çevrenin canlı olmayan bileşenlerini içeren dinamik olarak etkileşim içindeki kısımlardan oluşur. Birincil üretim, pedogenesis, besin maddesi bisikleti ve çeşitli niş inşaat faaliyetleri gibi ekosistem süreçleri, bir ortamdan enerji ve maddenin akışını düzenler. Bu süreçler spesifik yaşam öyküsü özelliklerine sahip organizmalar tarafından sürdürülür ve organizmaların çeşitliliğine biyolojik çeşitlilik denir. Tür çeşitlerini, genleri ve ekosistemleri ifade eden Biyoçeşitlilik, bazı ekosistem hizmetlerini geliştirir. Ekoloji, biyoloji ve Dünya bilimi içeren disiplinlerarası bir alandır. "Ekoloji" kelimesi, 1866'da Alman bilim adamı Ernst Haeckel tarafından üretildi.
