Ekonometri, ekonomik verilere matematik, istatistiksel yöntemler ve yakın geçmişte bilgisayar bilimi uygulamasıdır ve ekonomik ilişkilere ampirik içerik kazandırmayı amaçlayan ekonomi dalı olarak tanımlanmaktadır. Daha doğrusu, "teorinin ve gözlemin eşzamanlı gelişimine, uygun çıkarsama yöntemleriyle ilişkili olarak fiili ekonomik fenomenin nicel analizi" dir. Bir giriş ekonomi kitabı ekonometriyi, ekonomistlerin "basit ilişkileri çıkarmak için dağ dağılımı yapmalarına" izin verdiği şekilde anlatıyor. "Ekonometri" teriminin bilinen ilk kullanımı, Polonya ekonomisti Paweł Ciompa tarafından 1910'da yapıldı. Ragnar Frisch, terimi bugün kullanıldığı anlamda şekillendirme ile alakalı.
