Yunanca εκτός "dış" ve θερμός "sıcak" dan gelen bir ektoterm, iç fizyolojik ısı kaynaklarının vücut sıcaklığının kontrolünde nispeten küçük veya önemsiz önemi olan bir organizmadır. Bu tür organizmalar kendilerini çok ekonomik metabolik oranlarda çalıştırmalarına izin veren çevresel ısı kaynaklarına güvenirler. Bu tür bazı hayvanlar, deniz aşırı denizin bölgelerine özgü olduğu gibi, sıcaklıkların hemen hemen sabit olduğu ortamlarda yaşarlar. Aksine, sıcaklığın, diğer türdeki ektotermlerin fizyolojik faaliyetlerini sınırlayacak kadar geniş bir şekilde değiştiği yerde, birçok canlı ıslaklıkla dışardan kaynaklı ısı veya barınak kaynakları arar; Örneğin, birçok sürüngen vücut ısısını güneş altında bırakarak veya diğer davranışsal termoregülasyon mekanizmalarına ek olarak gerektiğinde gölge aramak suretiyle düzenler. Ektotermlerin aksine, endotermler, çoğunlukla dahili metabolik süreçlerden gelen ısı üzerine ağırlıklı olarak güvenir. Ektotermlerde, dalgalanan ortam sıcaklığı vücut sıcaklığını etkileyebilir.
