Matematiğin bazı işlev alanlarında tanımlanan doğrusal bir operatörün özfonksiyonu, çarpımsal bir ölçekleme faktörü dışında operatöre tam olarak olduğu gibi dönen o boşlukta herhangi bir sıfır olmayan fonksiyontur. Daha kesin bir ifadeyle, birisi belirli skalar için λ, karşılık gelen özdeğeridir. Diferansiyel özdeğer probleminin çözümü, f için gereken herhangi bir sınır koşuluna da bağlıdır. Her durumda, sınır koşulları ile birleştirildiğinde f = fn için karşılık gelen bir çözümü kabul eden sadece belirli özdeğerler λ = λn vardır. Örneğin, fk = ekx, herhangi bir k değeri için diferansiyel operatör için bir öz fonksiyon olup, karşılık gelen özdeğer λ = k2 - k'dır.
